Dennis worked in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Fuel Technology at Sheffield University, now part of the department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, from 1963 to the mid 1990s.

Dennis only slowly retired from his research into the properties of particles, how they react and grow, continuing his work in a small office, he shared with fellow retirees, long after he had officially retired as a senior lecturer
